Sao Sanda grew up in the royal court of Yawnghwe in the Shan States. In 1947, she left Burma to continue her studies in England. As an undergraduate at Girton College in Cambridge University she read Anthropology. She gained her B.A. (Hons) and M.A. (Hons) on 1953 and 1956 respectively.
